All the music
for Jairamji has been mixed and engineered in the Globesound
studio.The Globesound studio is no more than a very friendly
bedroom studio which has moved house quite a few times over
the years. I began to build it up in Brixton in 1997, from
there it has moved from Manchester, Brighton, and finally
to Somerset.
Studio technology
gives you many options these days, and we have used many
methods to get a piece of music finished. Most of the music
is recorded in 2 stages.The first stage involves just improvising
with the instruments that are to fit the piece, and when
a good theme is found, we'll record it. Often this gives
a piece of music in its own right, but we can also use the
individual takes to use in a new piece. In this way the
track is slowly brought to life as the layers build. This
is very different to live recording, but much more detail
can be created in the sounds and rythmns as the composition
takes shape.
On some tracks
we used a multitude if instruments to construct it, including
Tibetan singing bowls, African thumb pianos (m'bira's) wooden
and silver flutes, shaman drums, tabla, clay drums, Irish
dulcimer,violin, cello ...
